Botanical Gardens
The Peradeniya botanical gardens were founded in 1821 primarily to
introduce coffee trees and various other tropical plants of economic
importance to the region. It has been noted for its rich and varied
collections of about 4000 species of tropical woody plants. The most
important specimens of the garden include palms, orchids,
gymnosperms, and flowering trees.
The Haggala botanic gardens were founded in 1860 by the eminent
British botanist Dr. G.H.K. Thwaites who was superintendent of the
more famous gardens at Peradeniya. Haggala botanical gardens were
once the pleasure garden of Ravana of the Ramayana epic and
according to many, it was one of the places where the beautiful
Sitha was hidden by the demon king.
You can drive to any of the two botanic gardens within 21/2 hours
from Clunes Villa or we can make special arrangements for you to

Hortonplains
Captain William Fisher and Colonel Albert Watson visited Horton
Plains in 1834 and named it after the Governor of Ceylon - Sir
Robert Wilmot Horton. The plateau, which is 3,150 hectares in
extent, consists of wet Patna grasslands and tropical montane
forests with differentiations so sharp that the boundary between the
two vegetation types seems to have been drawn by tacit agreement.
Flocks of Yellow-eared Bulbuls, Velvet-fronted Nuthatches, Scimitar
Babblers, White-eyes, Pied Shrikes and Orange Minivets feed in the
Horton Plains. Black-winged Kites nest on the fir trees while Black
Eagles and Honey Buzzards soar overhead. You can also witness the
colorful Jungle Fowl staggering around in a drunken stupor after an
overdose of Nilloo blossom. Tours can be arranged to visit this
exhilarating destination by Jeep, which takes less than 3 hours.
